The UCD Emeriti Association welcomed Carole Joffe, winner of the 2022-23 Distinguished Emeriti Award, back to Campus, November 14. She offered a compelling discussion of America post Roe v Wade. With her decades long experience working in the socio-medical field of reproduction rights with doctors on the ground, she offered incisive analysis of the current conditions and future prognosis for health care for women choosing to make their own decisions on abortion and reproductive care. She is currently working on another book on the subject. A lite lunch after the lecture with colleagues and friends. Upcoming Brain Food talks include January 9 with Barbara Sellers-Young, “Art and Sustainability in the Land of Eden.” Dr. Sellers-Young will focus on Oregan’s artistic community’s engagement with sustainability to offer insights into innovative concepts concerning what is needed to invent and sustain a sustainable world. The talk is virtual and will require registration (link to register)
April 16 will bring Kay Dewey to campus for an in-person presentation at the Alumni Center (more later).
UCDEA Membership Committee, co-chaired by William David Wilson and Warren Pickett, is launching a pilot program with several schools/colleges to undertake surveys of their emeriti. The surveys will focus on what the emeriti would like from UCDEA, their colleges/schools and their departments; as well as what they might like to offer to the same. So far the Deans of Schools of Law and Veterinary Medicine and colleges of Letters and Sciences and Agriculture and Environmental Sciences are working with UCDEA on the surveys. Towards that end, Wilson and Pickett are leading a mammoth effort to update and synchronize various lists of UCD emeriti. If you would like to help with this outreach effort, please contact Suad Joseph.
The Communication and Outreach Committee, co-chaired by Klea Bertakis and Suad Joseph, is undertaking work to update the UCDEA website. Supported by the amazing work of Retiree Center student intern, Sachi Milind Nandedkar, the team is going page by page. At the beginning of 2024, we will also send out our newly annual request to our emeriti to share news of their work and activities. We welcome contributions to the webpage and volunteers to help with this work. https://emeritiassociation.ucdavis.edu/
The UCDEA Committee on Committees, co-chaired by Klea Bertakis and Barry Klein, is looking for UCDEA members who would like to volunteer to work on programs for next year – in addition to volunteers to join the Committee on Committees.
UCDEA is returning to its pre-Covid tradition of inviting campus leaders to a coffee hour prior to our Executive Board meeting. The Executive Committee meets the second Thursday of each month from 10am-12am in the Alumni Center. We will relaunch these coffee hours the beginning of January. The coffee hour will be 9-10am in the Alumni Center. We welcome emeriti and retirees to the coffee hours.
