President's Message

Fall 2017

Dear fellow Emeriti,

I was sorry to miss the June UC Davis Retiree Center’s reception celebrating this year’s retirees and emeriti. A belated special welcome to the 758 "graduates” of the class of 2017. As you embark on this next phase of life’s journey, I hope you enjoyed the summer and are refreshed and ready to set a new course for yourselves…one that includes the UCD Emeriti Association.

Affiliation with an academic institution always means that the new year starts in September for me. I expect it does for many of you. As I begin my second year as president of your UC Davis Emeriti Association, I hope you will join me in continuing to be active members of the UC Davis community, including participation in the varied opportunities provided by the UCDEA. Many of our activities are planned in conjunction with the UC Davis Retirees’ Association and UC Davis Retiree Center. These include monthly BrainFood Talks (Second Thursday’s at noon. Bring your lunch, we provide the coffee and cookies), field trips and socials. A new joint activity of both associations is to encourage contributions to the Share Your Story initiative, where you can submit a brief 250-word summary and picture explaining what brings you meaning and joy in your post- or continuing- UCD life. We would love to know yours. These are featured in the Retiree Center’s email updates and on our web pages.

I am thrilled that a satellite Retiree Center Office has recently opened in the new Betty Irene Moore building on the Sacramento campus. Sacramento based emeriti will be able to stop in and get their questions answered, meet with a Fidelity representative or just stop by to say hello. As the year progresses, Executive Committee members look forward to exploring ways to engage Sacramento emeriti with shared activities and opportunities on both sides of the causeway. We look forward to hearing your ideas through your representatives Gibbe Parsons and Roy Curry.

In addition to serving an advocacy role for emeriti through the Emeriti Welfare Committee and the UC Council of Emeriti Associations (CUCEA), UCDEA has several awards specifically for emeriti that recognize and honor your continuing work. Look for upcoming announcements.

One of our most active programs that is unique to UC Davis is the Video Record Project where we encourage you to sit down with a friend and tell the story of your career. These videos, not only document your contributions to the campus, the university, and your professional endeavors, but give your family and friends a glimpse into your campus life. They are easily accessible on YouTube, too. Our trusty videographers welcome your stories.

Please check out our web site to learn more about UCDEA activities, visit the Retiree Center at their website or Facebook page, look for the email updates, and stay engaged with the UC Davis community.

Sincerely,

Jo Anne
